To whomever reads,
Throughout this English 201 course we have engaged deeply in many different pieces of writings. From which all of these I have learned or discovered something new. When I first started reading most of these public literacy documents I would always do one thing first. I would try and never take a side of the argument or idea, I would always have an open mind and really try and understand what the writer was trying to make out. I found trying not to take a stand on either side would help me out when I would write a rhetorical precis about the piece of writing. Throuhout the course I found material that helped me out and some that didn't helped me out so much.
One of the writing assignments that I felt was difficult was classifying Evansville by reading through daily papers. I found it was difficult to follow along everyday and figure out what Evansville is all about. It was hard to find enough evidence to back all of my arguments up.
One of my writings that I was really pleased with myself was the Martin Luther King Jr. rhetorical precis. Even though I got a C+ on it I am still very pleased that I was able to understand the different appeals that he used in his writings and explain how he related to his audiences. This was one of my first precis that was over a lot of material and I believe I was able to cover it really well. I think this helped me throughout the rest of the course when I would look at a piece of writing and really understand it.
After completing the whole public sphere day I wished I would have approached in totally different. I would have actually set a project that involved the students actually doing something. I feel like getting volunteers around campus to actually get involved in a real project instead of sitting their handing out flyers would have made a better impact around campus. I would have probably had a totally different project if I could start over.
Public sphere week was helpful becuase it helped me understand how many other people around campus share the same ideas as you do but are afraid to bring the topic out to the public. It was also helpful because it allowed me the opportunity to express what I really thought on Conservation and Wildlife Management. I do believe the setting up under the UC was pretty much wasteful becuase no one really came to our booths, but I believe next year this will change and have it in between classes or have it in the UC food court.
My writing in the course have changed since last semester. I feel like I now really make a connection with the writer and now able to understand things that go beyond just the main point of the writing. I feel like I am really able to take all of my ideas and put them all on paper.
Overall I believe this class has taught me more than any other English class I have been in before. I feel like I have learned many things in such a wide variety of topics. I believe this class has changed my writing styles the most compared to any other English classes. Some advice I would give for future students of Dominic Micer is to not jump to conclusion about his class. I felt like dropping it very fast but I stayed and now I am really glad I continued on through the class. Public Sphere day sounds really dumb at first but turns out to be a lot of fun and you are able to do something you have never done in any other class. Overall I really enjoyed this class and got a lot more out of it then I would have ever thought.

What I come to understand is that Aisha really likes poetry, and this helps her out when she tries to understand other peoples blogs. I think you should use poetry in some of your future blogs to help you get you point out. Even if Aisha doesn't like her have interest in other peoples blog she still tries to help them out in any way possible.

Martin Luther King Jr. wrote, “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” it is said to be one of the better rhetorical acts and I highly agree. Most people that have read this letter would agree that it deeply thought out and well written. Martin Luther King Jr. was able to write such a great letter by using many different rhetorical appeals to let his audience really understand the point or statement he was trying to make. Even though there are a few logical fallacies, Martin Luther King Jr. was able to steer away from most of them.
In this letter he was able emotional appeals very easily considering this letter was mostly on how Martin Luther King Jr. and his brotherhood were mistreated. An example of a pathos appeals is when he says “For years now I have heard the word “wait!”. It rings in the ear of every Negro with piercing familiarity.” He was able to relate to his audience so well with emotion because most of his audience understands and probably had first hand experienced before. I believe his emotional appeals were the most effective in his letter because his audience was able to connect and understand the all the hurt in Martin Luther King’s heart. His pathos appeals are very powerful to its reader and his statements really leave a mark. His secret he uses behind these writings are writing what his broters really want to hear out of his writings. Martin Luther King Jr. was able to make his pathos appeal meaningful by continuing to make the statement that he broke in unjust law. He also was able to relate to his audience so well by describing unjust in his own emotional, vivid, and concrete way.
Logical appeals were also very important in Marin Luther King Jr. letter, he was able relate back to Historical people and situations. He was to go in great detail to describe his meanings of topics. One example is when he is on the topic of unjust laws. Martin Luther King Jr. states “Sometimes a law is just on its face and unjust in its application.” This came into play when he got arrested for parading without a permit. Martin Luther King Jr. is trying to make the point that the people making the law do not realize how much pain they are putting towards the minorities.
When Martin Luther King Jr. would start on a new subject he would always approach is audience in the right way. By doing this Marin was able to keep his readers attention and focused. Even though this piece of writing is very well done he kept it at a normal reading level.
Martin Luther King Jr. wrote this letter with so much meaning behind it, it was hard for him to keep fallacies out of his letter. Although there were few fallacies, I still believe that Martin did an unbelievable job on keeping more of them out when he is writing with so much meaning and reasoning on the immoral segregation he has felt.

Great Living in Evansville
When people are looking for places to live they look at what the city is all about and how it functions. Most people would first look at the crime rate, if they have well organized school corporations, and the cost of living. Learning how your city operates and functions is very important information before you decide on where to develop and raise your family.
From gathering information, Evansville, In. is one of the best places to raise your family and live in the mid-west. This claim is asserted for many reasons. For the major factors of why Evansville is a great place to live is because Evansville has a low crime rate, very involved schools, and plenty of activities for singles, families, and especially kids, and sports play a big role in it too. Evansville is the third largest city in Indiana but yet has a definite small town felling to it. As of 2008 the population of Evansville is around 115,000 people.
To start off why most people are drawn into the Evansville region is because of some interesting events and activities. To name of the most popular one of them include the fall festival which is almost one of the largest street festivals in the world. The fall festival is a great experience for the family. This is a place where you can take your family down to the festival and eat, play games, and ride rides and have a lot of fun.
One may argue that it is a little bit dangerous to take your kids down there do to the types of crowds and people that hang out downtown. Which is true but there are many ways to avoid these situations. These things include going down there during the day or before night when most people go down there. You could also go down there in big groups or with a lot of people that you know. Also just taking your kids down to the fall festival lets them know what it feels like to participate in local activities. Kids will be able to realize all of the different kinds of people and groups that participate in the festival around their communities. The advantages of taking your kids down to the festival totally outweigh the disadvantages. Another event that occurs in Evansville is the boat races, called Thunder on the Ohio. This also is a huge attraction that has been going on in Evansville for quite awhile now. The Frog Follies is also another event that takes place in Evansville. These are also other ways to share great family time in Evansville. These are some of the main events that occur in here and give Evansville a little bit of attention. With all these big events occurring in Evansville, the main focus around town is education.
Schools in this region are very important too. When looking at schools in Evansville they are outstanding. There are many public grades schools and they are very nice. Also there is a great selection of private schools around Evansville. Some statistics show that the average one teacher has about fifteen students which are very nice numbers and allows the teachers to have a lot of one on one time. The school corporations also spend about 6,590 dollars per student, which is about five hundred more dollars then the average spending of anywhere else around Indiana. (In. Schools) In the public schools, there are a lot of different races together, which I have experienced firsthand. This allows your kid to learn how to be interactive with different kinds of people, which is a very important thing in today’s society. The two main colleges here are the University of Southern Indiana and the University of Evansville which are both outstanding and constantly growing universities. They are great place to let your kids get the college experience but also still be in their hometown. There are also other colleges around Evansville that include Indian Business College and Ivy Tech community school. These colleges are filled with very outgoing people.
Evansville also has a very low crime rate compared to other cities in Indiana. Evansville has a crime rate of 388 incidents per 100,000 residents. The average incidents in Indiana are about 516 and the average for our nation is about 600 per 100,000 people (Crime Report). So as you can tell there is not a whole lot of crime involved throughout Evansville. Some may argue that these numbers are still pretty high. By looking at the map of crimes in Evansville, mostly all of them are occurring within about a five mile range around downtown. This means living on the outer suburbs could keep you away from a lot of related crimes. There are many things to do to steer away from crimes. First off research the neighborhood you want to live in before you move in. Understanding your neighborhood can keep you away from all the crime. Also you can inform your kids on what to watch out for, and deciding on where they go and on what they do to keep them away from high risk crime areas. There are also many places here to get away from all the crime that does occur.
The list of activities to do in Evansville is very long. There are many great places to take your whole family to. Things like going to our great zoo, the movie theaters, malls, museums, and events at the stadium are all great things for you and your kids to enjoy. Sports in Evansville are taken very seriously. There are multiply organizations your kids can get involved in to participate in sports. This will help you kids social skills improve by working with other teammates.
For a smaller town like Evansville we get a lot of big shows and concerts at our stadium. The main reason is because were also called the crossroads of America. Also entertainment for the adults is very well too. Adults can enjoy going to the Evansville’s riverboat, or many of the local clubs and sports bars around town. The selection of restaurants down here is also very good. The argument may come up that there is the same thing in the other big cities around Indiana, but around Evansville most of these attractions are not always crowded like other big cities because we don’t have such a great number in population. Another great thing about Evansville is that you are in really close distance to a lot of major cities in the mid-west. This allows you to be hours from top-notch entertainment.
With all of these great activities and places to visit most people would think the cost of living would be fairly high but it is not. Compared to the rest of the country, Evansville cost of living is 29.30% lower than the U.S. average. In Evansville there are a lot more affordable homes then most places around the U.S. Also the jobs around this area are very plentiful. With many big power plants and manufacturing companies it creates many job opportunities to the surrounding areas.
Some other reasons people find Evansville a great city is because of the frontier leagues that include the Evansville Otters baseball team, and the Evansville Blue-Cats indoor football league, also including Evansville Aces basketball team which are great to watch. All these games are cheap and really fun.
Overall Evansville is a great place to raise your children and also live compared to most places around the mid-west. With the crime low, many attractions, great schools, and low cost of living who wouldn’t want to live in Evansville. This is a great place to get started. Evansville has the atmosphere of a big city and the atmosphere of a small town at the same time. So this is a great place for people that want to have the big city picture but at the same time have a small hometown feeling. The kids will enjoy the sports, activities, and being able to bond with all the different kind of minorities throughout growing up.

The Public sphere project I choose to do was to create a conservation and wildlife management group around campus. My main goal is to get USI involved in Conservation and Wildlife management programs around campus. I am not too concerned in actually adding it to the curriculum but just have groups and programs around campus that are involved in conservation programs and groups. This topic came to my mind for many reasons. To start off I am an avid hunter and outdoorsmen and I believe it is very important to focus and inform our future generations on the importance of wildlife management and conservation. I understand the importance of conserving our environment and preserving certain animals.
If I could get students to get together and create a club and inform then of problems around campus and we could go out fix them I believe it would benefit to our campus in many ways. These groups that I would get together would perform many different tasks that include conserving are wetlands around campus, preserving our wooded acres, and many others. It would obviously help maintain a safe and healthy environment around campus but it would also be a very easy way to get the students away from the everyday lecture classes. Students would be able to get outside and participate in experimental learning by doing hands on activities. It is proven that students remember more and longer but and enjoy working this way. I think it would also draw more students’ attention to USI if we had these program or projects on campus. Due to the area in which USI is located, I believe kids from around all the rural counties when looking at USI clubs, this would be an incentive of coming to this campus.
Another reason this topic stood out to me is because all of the surrounding area around USI, which most of it is wooded acres and lakes. This would make it very easy for groups to participate in projects on campus. I believe that most students that are attending USI do not think about the environment around them as much as they should. I think this project would be a good way to get students involved in many different activities they are not use to. These projects would allow students to be involved in activities. Some include vegetation, which we clould plant needed plants that have a lot of nutritious elements that will help animals take in the needed nutrients. This would also include taking samples of the ground to figure out what the best place to plant these plants at. Taking sample of the ground helps you figure out what minerals are lacking or have to much of for the best results for the plants. I would also plan to work with animals as much as we could. We would be able to go around the lakes and check on baby geese or ducks and make sure they are healthy. I believe if any group or organization were to be created around campus that it would draw in much interest from some of our fellow students.
I planned on setting up booth on the lawn with a big tri-fold poster board. The board would be full of information and pictures. I would also like to have a video playing that relates to conservation or wildlife management. I also plan on making a frequently asked questioned sheet because I know a lot of people around campus would have a lot of questioned. If possible I would like to set up a sample or small project that I could get students involved in. If this were possible I would make flyers that would talk about when, what, where we are doing this project.
Overall I am counting on this project to be very successful and very fun. It would allow the students to get outside and experience many different types of learning skills. Even if I do not get to start up my own project maybe I will influence somebody else and they will have the urge to try and start up one on their own.

Conservation and Wildlife Management
Benefits
• Many professionals strongly claim that experimental learning in land conservation is one of the best ways to achieve your professional knowledge. The key to experimental learning is that it gets the students away from being passively exposed through traditional lectures and allows them to feel like they are actually involved in the subject matter.
• Keeping ecosystems intact and wildlife wild.
• Getting students involved and gaining experience in land surveying, vegetation sampling, GPS technology, and public speaking are just some of the skills land conservation bring forth.
• Conservation and wildlife management projects that have been completed at other schools have turned out to be cheaper than some of their other departments projects.

A J Kroll. . "Integrating Professional Skills in Wildlife Student Education " Journal of Wildlife Management 71.1 (2007): 226-230. Research Library Core.
His main point of this article is he is arguing that such training will increase scientific rigor and produce wildlife researchers and managers who are better able to overcome the current and future challenges. Kroll states very clearly that wildlife management should be a mandatory planning class in education. He says this because the profession of wildlife management will help the students steer away from their normal everyday class schedules and be able to develop essential skills that they would not usually be comprehended inside normal classrooms. Skills that include grant concessions, making decisions, and implement policies. Another big issue he hits on is that this type of professional training will bridge the gap of science management that would not be found in your regular science studies at a university.
This text could easily help me explain why having a wildlife management programs at USI would benefit to our students. It will help me understand some of the important skills that are gained while one is in the course of training.

Gaining experience in land surveying, vegetation, sampling, GPS technology, and public speaking are just some of the skills that would be brought in if land conservation was part of the universities curriculum. Also most land conservation projects are done in groups, which would give students time to gain social skills by working and planning with other students. Land conservation also improves students writing skills by having them write out their habitat management plans, and then letting other students peer revise their paper and they do the same to other students’ papers.
This information would be vital when trying to start an organization at USI for many reasons. It would inform most people what experimental learning can bring into the field of land conservation. It allows me to see how the students would be able to get involved in the actual subject matter.
Sherry Everett Jones, Robert Axelrad, Wendy A Wattigney. "Healthy and Safe School Environment, Part II, Physical School Environment: Results From the School Health Policies and Programs Study 2006. " The Journal of School Health 77.8 (2007): 544-56. Health Module.
Jones, Axelrad, and Wattigney explain the importance of why they physical environment of schools should be addressed as the number one critical factor that influences academic outcomes. They bring this topic up to help us understand how many hours students, teachers, and staff spend at school and why it is so important to keep the environment safe and clean. They talk about the studies that have been done and how bad the atmosphere around these campuses really is. They explain the factors behind this that includes air pollution, lead in paint, drinking water, tobacco smoke, and many of the pesticides and chemicals used around campus. They hit on the positive side of this argument that most schools now have Green Policies they follow. These policies include surveys, onsite inspections, and many other regulations. Also there are beginning to be many programs for students to be able and get involved and help out protecting their own universities.
This information would help me come up with other ways to get students outside and involved with their surrounding community. It will help me and other students understand the importance of keeping their universities safe and clean.

These researches also stress the point that experimental learning is the number one most effective way of learning in school. They also believe creating on-campus wildlife research projects put on by students is an alternative way to improve the quality of wildlife education. Some of the projects they talk about include habitat measurements, population estimation, and wildlife ecology. After completing these projects they concluded that students retain the information longer and show more enthusiasm for the subject when they are able to interact with the material. It also increases their potential to create different learning styles. They also talk about the arguments that come up on this topic that include the projects would be to expensive. But comparing their projects to other projects in the same field they are cheaper.
This information will help me understand the benefits the campus will obtain if they add wildlife programs in their curriculum. It will also help me understand the research process helps to stimulate, energize, and increase learning potential for graduate students and faculty as well as undergraduates.
Jennie R Cramer. . "REVIVING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN CHILDREN AND NATURE through service-learning restoration partnerships. " Native Plants Journal 9.3 (2008): 278-286. Sciences Module.
Jennie Cramer talks about getting kids and students outside to work on restoring the native ecosystem while also building a connection to their surroundings at the same time. This also inspires kids to continue to do this in the future. She hits the point that having classes or groups doing this set a schedule for the kids so that every day they will continue to make the connection to the land around them. She says activities like these are very productive towards students because it provides education to the kids and also meets the restoration goals.
By reading this article is will help me stress the point that having set time, like in a classroom, will help the kids make sure they have time every day to make the connection with nature. They will be able to connect with students and the surrounding area.

He hits the point that conserving wetlands is very important as well as conserving the environment. He talks about how wetlands create habitats for many different plants and animals but at the same time create sources for humans like water and food. He talks about the fact that China is very rich in wetlands. Talks about how there are already 260 natured wetlands. He relates back to the statement that trees are the lungs of the earth and the water sources are the kidneys of the earth. There are also many products produced by the species and other plants that strive in the water. He talks about many other different projects that China is trying to start up around their country.
I will be able to use this in my project so I can relate to other conservation projects in different countries around the world. I will be able to talk about how the wetlands are just important as the forest.

Joan starts off her essay about how more schools are getting media attention because of their environmental issues. She’s focuses on schools in New England and mostly focuses on the issues that are in the school. She talks about topics that include controlling the water, waste, and vehicle pollution. There are many environmental groups and organizations out there that help out by giving information and grants to help out the schools. They have formed several state wide groups that have greatly helped out in many ways to the environment around schools.
This will help me on my project by seeing if there are any groups around this region to help on environmental issues. See if groups would be able to help with new projects.

A J Kroll.

Dear Editor:
Some of the students at USI that are in English 201 classes are participating in a public sphere day projects. This project involves the students doing research around the Evansville area and around campus. The main idea is for the students to be able to get their ideas out to the public on something that they wanted to be changed or added to USI. Their ideas can include changing or joining already existing programs or even to the extent of creating their own organization. I choose do a project that involved protecting our environment.
The project that I choose for my public sphere day is to inform the students on the benefits of creating a conservation and wildlife management programs and projects around campus. I choose this project because of the location of USI, the location of campus includes many lakes and hundreds of wooded acres that would be the ideal setting for carrying forth many projects. The benefits the students would achieve from these projects obviously include maintaining a healthy and safe environment and students would also be able to get outside of the classroom and be involved in experimental learning. It is proven that students will remember information longer if they are actually doing hands on activities. This is a way to get some of the students away from their everyday lecturing classes. I believe that most students around the campus do not pay any attention to their surrounding environment and this idea would be able to inform the students of many things and also get them involved in many projects. Some of the projects the students could get involved in would be land surveying, vegetation, sampling, GPS technology, and working with animals.
Overall I believe protecting the area that we have left around campus is very important. This is a way to get the students outside and experience may different types of learning skills. Creating this project will help me inform the students on something most of them do not pay attention to. I am counting on this project to be very successful and fun. I am hoping to change the student’s views on conserving the land around them or maybe encouraging someone to take this project farther than I am.
Sincerely,
Mike K. Haug
